Chapter 16

Another lie

Claudia

Dawn had already begun and the light was slowly spreading across the skies, so I managed to get my bearings quickly once I was high enough to see beyond the field. I found my way to Knightsbridge easily, which made getting home fairly simple. Too simple in fact as I took a second flight around just to give myself more time to think.

I needed to see Solomon. He hadn’t left my thoughts once since starting my journey home. I needed to let him know I was okay and explain what had happened, but most of all I just wanted to make sure he wasn’t upset with me. I hated the fact that I had fought with him even though it wasn’t something that I had any control over. I hadn’t even known of our fight at first, but the memories had returned, just as Marcus said they would. And as I made my flight home the images taunted my mind. The image of Solomon’s face as I fought to protect Winston and get away from them. The picture of shock, confusion and hurt all at once on a face where only a smile belonged. The worst part was knowing that, for someone who never found a reason not to smile, I had finally given him one.

Softly landing in the shadows I made my way down his road, but the absence of his car was apparent long before I arrived at his house. So making my way home was the next course of action and taking the rest of the journey by foot seemed like a good idea. I still had a lot of thoughts to clear before being confronted by Charles, and I hoped that Solomon had been allowed to wait for me there since he wasn’t at his place. A hope that was confirmed when I eventually arrived outside of my own house.

So, it’s a double confrontation, I told myself as I walked up the drive. It didn’t seem too bad, I had already decided what I would and wouldn’t tell them and it was pretty much the same thing for both. I knew I couldn’t tell Charles about what had happened with my mother, and I wouldn’t mention any of his creepy curl twisting moves. In fact, I had to make him out to be as honourable as possible, without getting Charles annoyed.

I know exactly how to lay down this whole situation, I reassured myself. And if it doesn’t work I could always start crying. Both Solomon and Charles are suckers for my tears, I stopped for a moment to gather my thoughts, not sure exactly where that one had come from. It wasn’t like me to take advantage of people’s kindness, or was that exactly what I had subconsciously been doing with them.

Never mind, I told myself and gently pulled my key from my pocket taking care not to allow it to jingle. I opened the front door as quietly as I could, entered and then gently closed it behind me.
